2009 Sangiovese, Ciparisso, La Fralluca, Val di Cornia Suvereto, Tuscany, Italy (£27.50, reduced to £25 each for six bottles and £22.50 each for 12 bottles, swig.co.uk, 08000-272272).
Francesca and Luca, whose names are blended to make their winery name La Fralluca, met when they were both working for Milanese clothes retailer, La Rinascente. They both wanted out and both loved wine, so they set about finding a property in a lesser-known region of Tuscany to transfer their passions into making great wine and live their dream. They were very lucky to meet and employ the services of famous wine consultant Federico Curtaz, who had been head viticulturist for none other than Angelo Gaja in Barbaresco.
They stumbled upon a plot of land in Suvereto, overlooking the famous region of Bolgheri, home to the great Super-Tuscans Sassicaia and Ornellaia, and snapped it up. They tapped into the potential of their awesomely situated vineyards in no time at all.
The warm days and cool nights, thanks to the altitude of Suvereto, gives Ciparisso, a 100% sangiovese, extraordinary finesse. At six years old, this wine is drinking beautifully and the quality and complexity of it is baffling. I would have guessed it was a £50-plus creation from a noble region. It is half that from somewhere I have never heard of – this is why I love my job!
