Markets: FTSE 100 claws its way back

The FTSE 100 bounced back, climbing 144 points to close at 6,504 on Thursday.

The FTSE 100 bounced back, climbing 144 points to close at 6,504 on Thursday.

Investment management group 3i led the way with a 7.9% gain, followed by electricity company SSE, up 5.6%. Publishers Informa added 5.3%.

Royal Bank of Scotland took the hardest hit of the day, falling 4.8%.

In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 rose 42 points to 4,237, and the German Xetra Dax gained 68 points to 9,680.

In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.3% to 17,930, the S&P 500 added 1.4% to 2,099, and the Nasdaq Composite was 1.3% higher at 4,843.

Overnight in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.7% to 15,682, as did the broader Topix index to 1,254. And in China, the Shanghai Composite rose 0.1% to 2,932, and the CSI 300 was more or less flat at 3,154.

Brent spot was trading at $49.68 early today, and in New York, crude oil was at $48.39. Spot gold was trading at $1,334 an ounce, silver was at $19.16 and platinum was at $1,029.

In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.3312 and against the euro at 1.1983. The dollar was trading at 0.9001 against the euro and 102.60 against the Japanese yen.

And in the news this morning, the yield on ten-year UK government bonds has fallen by eight basis points to a record low of 0.81% as investors flee market volatility to safe havens.
