The fires are burning at Paiton 3, a new 815 megawatt coal-fired power plant on Java Island in Indonesia, power generator International Power has revealed.
The plant is owned and operated by PT Paiton Energy, in which International Power has a 40.5% stake; International Power itself is 70% owned by French utility giant GDF Suez.
Paiton 3 is the first super-critical coal unit in Indonesia and the largest generating unit on the Java-Bali grid, International Power disclosed. The output from Paiton 3 will be supplied to PT PLN (Persero), the Indonesian state utility, under a 30-year power purchase agreement.
