The 20 best stocks on the FTSE

I wrote here a few weeks ago about a piece of research looking at the 20 most consistent performers in the FTSE over the last 20 years.

Andy Lapthorne of Societe Generale looked at the stocks that have at least a ten-year trading history, you could have bought in any month since 1993 (or their listing) and been certain to make a positive absolute return, had you held them for five years.

To find them, he took all the stocks with a long enough trading history – 329 qualified – and ranked them every month on a five-year total return basis. All those with any negative returns were removed.

A mere 20 remained. I named the top ten in the original piece, but many of you have asked for the full list. It is below.

Please bear in mind that the fact these companies have all done so well in the last 20 year is no guarantee they will do anything useful at all in the next five.

However, as Lapthorne says, the fact that “they have delivered consistent share price performance over such a long period must indicate some form of competitive advantage”.
