Vanilla-kissed stunner for under a tenner

Matthew Jukes celebrates the handcrafted vintages of Australian winemaker Tim Adams - creator of some of the best wines from Down Under.

Tim Adams (known affectionately as Bonecrusher, due to his wince-inducing handshake) is one of Australia's unsung wine heroes. I've known him for more than 20 years, which coincides with the period in which Australia has taken the wine world by storm. His impact in this modern day wine coup is unquantifiable: he has enhanced the palates of both professional and regular wine lovers with his handcrafted wines.

Tesco and various others stock these affordable, accurate and delicious models of their kind I deem them some of the best from Australia and most are still under a tenner!

Look out for his riesling, and a grenache-based red called Fergus, too. I'm told that 620 stores stock his legendary Semillon, so you should find it easily. It drinks perfectly from day one, but ages for a decade.

With three-quarters fermented in new French barrels and roughly the same proportion spending five months in oak, this acacia honey, juicy lime and vanilla-kissed stunner should take the place of white Burgundy on your table when you are looking to save a few quid, but still knock the socks off your wine-adept pals.

Matthew Jukes has worked in the UK wine business for well over three decades and during this time has written 14 wine books.  

Matthew regularly lectures, judges, speaks at wine conferences and runs masterclass tastings for both corporate and private clients all over the world.
