Vedanta Resources said the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India has granted the company an appeal over the closure of its copper smelter in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
Vedanta Resources said the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India has granted the company an appeal over the closure of its copper smelter in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.
The Madras High Court had ordered the mining giant's subsidiary Sterlite Industries to shut down the factory for violation of green norms and environmental damage following a gas leak on March 27th.
The company was fined 1.0bn Rupees for polluting the town.
The court appointed a team to carry out inspection of the unit which showed it met the required standards. Certain recommendations for improvements were also implemented.
"The Hon'ble Supreme Court after being satisfied has allowed the appeal of the company," Vedanta said in a statement Wednesday.
"We welcome the judgment given by the Hon'ble Supreme Court. We will continue to work in close association with the government of Tamil Nadu and other regulatory bodies, towards maintaining highest standards of health, safety and environment."
