Five great new hotel openings for 2016

Chris Carter picks five of the world's best hotels set to open in 2016.

Limalimo Lodge, Ethiopia

The 14 rooms at the lodge itself exude a "down-to-earth" contemporary style, with fireplaces, designer sofas and "tall windows facing across the mountains", says Juliet Kinsman in The Independent and the setting is truly "soul-stirring".

Chena Huts, Sri Lanka

Chena Huts is the latest chic hotel to open in Sri Lanka, says Chesshyre. Situated on the southern tip of the island, the hotel's 14 "romantic" wooden cabins have palm-thatched roofs and their own private plunge pools, and are just a stone's throw away from the jungle-fringed beach.

Alternatively, you can cool off in the cocktail bar or head to the restaurant, which serves local cuisine. The nearby Yala National Park is great for wildlife watching, while closer to home sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the white sand. If you're really lucky, you might even spy elephants playing in the surf.

Park Hyatt Mallorca Resort, Spain

Visit this resort and you might be fooled into believing you are in a picturesque Mallorcan village. But the smattering of terracotta-roofed houses, restaurant, caf and tapas bar are all part of the newest Park Hyatt Resort, says Claire Wrathall on the Telegraph Luxury site. It will be the first such resort in Europe when it opens in spring.

Set within the Cap Vermell Estate of villas, the resort has three swimming pools, with one fed by a cascade. If you want to work on your swing, there are four golf courses within ten miles, along with tennis courts and a private beach club.

Zemi Beach House Resort, Anguilla

With its "pink-hued sand and bright blue waters", Shoal Bay Beach is one of the best beaches on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, says Jade Conroy in The Daily Telegraph. Next month, it welcomes its first hotel in the form of Zemi Beach House Resort, combining classic Caribbean architecture with "luxurious features", such as glass-bottomed kayaks and an ocean-front swimming pool with a glass window.

If you're looking to take your children with you on a luxury break to the Caribbean, Zemi is perfect for families, says Doug Gollan on Some rooms have their own private plunge pools, while even the penthouses are kitted out for roof-top swimming perfect for keeping everybody occupied. Don't miss the Thai spa, complete with a gobek tasi a heat-radiating stone used in Turkish baths.

Ace Hotel, New Orleans

The latest addition to the Ace Hotel family stays true to its quirky roots, says Shivani Vora in The New York Times. This 1928 building has 234 rooms and an "Art Deco and Dadaist-inspired aesthetic". The hotel is located in the heart of New Orleans's Warehouse District, which is famous for its galleries and museums.

Hipsters will love it when it opens in March, agrees Jade Conroy in The Daily Telegraph. And the menu's not bad either. James Beard Award nominated chefs, Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman from Memphis, will be cooking up American Southern favourites in the kitchen. "Expect food for the soul."
