Champagne corks were popping in Mali as gold mining colossus Randgold Resources announced the official opening of the Gounkoto mine, the company's fourth gold mine in Mali.
The mine was opened by Tiena Coulibaly, Mali's minister of the economy, finance and budget.
The mine is a separate corporate entity with its own mining licence, but is operationally linked to the company's nearby Loulo complex, itself in the process of expansion.
