Commodities have never gotten the respect they deserve, and it's been something of a mystery to me why.

More than three decades ago, as a young investor searching for value wherever I could find it, I realized that by studying just a commodity or two one began to see the world anew. Suddenly, you were no longer eating breakfast but thinking about whether the weather in Brazil would keep coffee and sugar prices up or down, how Kellogg's shares would respond to higher corn prices, and whether demand for bacon (cut from pork bellies) would go down during the summer months.
