Lush tones from a legendary white

This is the greatest Soave of all and a veritable bargain at that, says Matthew Jukes.

2012 Pieropan, La Rocca, Soave Classico, Veneto, Italy (about £25.99; www.majestic.co.uk; Philglas & Swiggot,020-7924 4494; Highbury Vintners,020-7226 1347; Lea & Sandeman,020-7244 0522; Hedonism Wines,020-7989 0085; Vallebona, 020-8944 5665, Mill Hill Wines, 020-8959 6754;The Secret Cellar, 01892-537981;Taylor's Fine Wines, 020-8549 2984;The Wine Reserve, 01932-866682; South Downs Cellars, 01273-833830; Champion Wines, 020-3581 9935).

It's no surprise that a veritable cornucopia of great wine merchants list this beauty, because it is, after all, the greatest Soave of all! Listed in my 100 Most Iconic Wine Estates book, Pieropan has been producing wines since the 1890s theywere the first people ever to put the word Soave on a bottle of wine.

Nino Pieropan's La Rocca comes from a limestone outcrop situated on the Monte Rocchetta hill, just underneath Soave's medieval fortress. The 2012 is a stunning release and it is one of the finest Italian white wines I have seen in years.

Made exclusively from garganega, this is the Grand Cru' in the portfolio and it sees some oak which gives it lush tones and considerable class. A veritable bargain in a world context you must taste this legendary wine.
