Maximise your charitable impact this tax year
Have you considered how your support as a UK taxpayer can make a positive difference to nature this tax year by supporting the Woodland Trust’s ambitious mission?
The Snaizeholme valley, located near Hawes in the North Yorkshire Dales, is one of the last true strongholds for the British red squirrel. These incredible creatures have survived here since the 1970s, protected by the valley's remote location within a grey squirrel exclusion zone monitored by the National Park.
However, their future depends on the scale of their habitat. That’s why the Woodland Trust has set a target of £4.86 million to expand and continue restoring the Snaizeholme Estate, trebling the available red squirrel habitat to create a safe haven where these and other endangered species can truly thrive.
The Trust is seeking to raise this money to expand its holdings in the Yorkshire Dales, creating a sanctuary for rare species and a massive carbon sink. The expansion will add 141 hectares to the 561 hectares already owned by the Trust.
As we approach the end of the tax year, investors may now want to consider investing in this natural investment.
Tax efficiency
The UK tax system provides significant incentives for charitable giving, particularly for those paying higher rates of income tax. For the 2025/26 tax year, individuals paying 40% or 45% tax can reclaim the difference between the basic rate and their highest rate on the gross value of their donation.
This relief can be claimed via a self-assessment tax return or by calling HMRC to amend a tax code. For instance, a gift from a 45% taxpayer allows the individual to claim a 25% tax credit on the gross donation value.
This mechanism allows you to effectively increase the "power" of your donation or retain the tax savings, making it a highly efficient way to support large-scale conservation. While this information does not constitute professional financial or legal advice, it highlights why late-March is a peak period for transformational giving.
By acting now, you can ensure that your capital is deployed in a way that benefits both your estate and the natural world before the fiscal year concludes.
Urgent acquisition
The urgency of this appeal cannot be overstated. The Woodland Trust has the opportunity to purchase three strategically critical of land in the Snaizeholme valley, including two large commercial conifer plantations. These plantations are vital because they already house the rare red squirrel.
While the Trust has already planted 290 hectares of new woodland, it will take years for those trees to mature. "Acquiring these existing conifer blocks and an extra slice of open fell immediately brings an additional 140 hectares under conservation management", providing the "missing jigsaw piece" for the valley's wildlife.
The red squirrel is the heart of this appeal, but it is far from the only resident benefiting from the Trust’s work. The restoration of the valley is a lifeline for the black grouse, a species whose numbers have plummeted due to habitat loss. The Trust is also creating suitable conditions for ground-nesting birds such as the curlew, as well as for barn owls, little owls, and tawny owls.
Even the watercourses are coming back to life; rare native white-clawed crayfish are found in the becks, and the valley will soon be home to kingfishers and wading birds.
Lasting legacy
For the high-net-worth individual, Snaizeholme represents a tangible, lasting legacy that stretches far beyond a single lifetime. The Woodland Trust is effectively rolling back the clock 500 years to restore a primordial landscape.
This is a bold, ambitious project that requires the support of donors who understand that true conservation is a multi-generational investment. The Trust, founded in 1972, has the experience to manage this for the long term, caring for more than 1,000 woods across the country, all of which remain free for the public to visit. This scale of operation ensures that your donation is managed by an organisation with the expertise and longevity to see the Snaizeholme project through to its 500-year vision.
Time is ticking toward the end of the tax year and the purchase deadline. By becoming a major donor today, you are initiating a long-term relationship with the Trust, offering you the chance to be part of future "transformational" projects at the highest level.
