Oil falls back – and won’t bounce far

A month ago, the price of Brent crude oil hit a new four-year high of more than $86 a barrel. In a spectacular reversal of fortune, it is now in a bear market, having plummeted by more than 20%.

A month ago, the price of oil (as measured by the European benchmark, Brent crude) hit a new four-year high of more than $86 a barrel. Now it is in a bear market, having plummeted by more than 20%, to below $70 a barrel. It's a spectacular reversal of fortune but then, "oil is the most emotional market I know," as Thibaut Remoundos, CEO of the Commodities Trading Corporation, put it in the Financial Times. This time last month, traders were betting there would be too little supply. Yet now a surplus is emerging instead. "The sentiment pendulum is swinging back again."
