What's so special

What's so special

This award-winning resort attracts guests year after year, thanks to its ski-in, ski-out access in winter, fantastic level of luxury and the outdoor whirlpools that allow you to enjoy the spectacular scenery while you relax and indulge after a day on the slopes.

How they rate it

The interiors of the hotel are "quirkily contemporary in their styling", says Ultratravel magazine. The magazine recommends you visit in summer as well as winter, as "summer provides outdoor options ranging from fly-fishing to ballooning and wolf-watching".

The Four Seasons made it onto Cond Nast Traveller's Gold List in 2010, thanks to its "great art collection", which includes works by Miro and Giacometti. The range of activities offered from the resort includes heliskiing and dog-sledding in winter, and kayaking and paragliding in summer.

The menu

The hotel restaurant, a top-notch steakhouse, is worth a visit even if you aren't staying in the hotel. There is a broad choice of meat (plus some fish), but vegetarians will struggle.

Three unusual hotels

"On the northeast coast of the volcanic island of Santorini lie three white-washed windmills, their canvas sails creaking in the wind," says Lonely Planet Traveller. Each sleeps up to five and is available from May to October. "Much is made of the windmills' curves the beds, staircases and bathrooms are built into the walls." All have a private pool and terrace.

Cabanes als Arbres in Spain takes treehouses "up a notch", with a "veritable village of houses perched up in the branches of the Forest of Guilleries in Girona". Each of the ten cabins is built around a Douglas fir or beech tree and has its own terrace. "To preserve the natural atmosphere of the woodland, there is no electricity guests are warmed by a paraffin heater, can read by candlelight and hoist up their breakfast from ground level in a basket on a rope."
