Where to stay in Bangkok

A luxurious bolt hole and old-world charm in the Thai capital.

Oriental Residence

What's so special

The Oriental Residence has only been open for a few months, but it has already claimed the number-three spot on TripAdvisor's best short-stay accommodation chart in Bangkok. Given the level of luxury on offer it isn't hard to see why guests love it, and it starts almost from the minute you touch down. Guests are met at the airport by a Jaguar XJS and are even given an iPad to entertain themselves during the 45-minute transfer.

"Awakening to views from the upper storeys of the Oriental Residence you get an alternative perspective of the city to the frenzy of street-level downtown Bangkok," says Mark Stratton in The Independent. He recommends a one-bedroom suite with a balcony: "the floor-to-ceiling windows ensure the suite's already whopping proportions feel even airier". Introductory room rates also make this "an outstandingly good-value bolt hole".

The menu

There are two hotel restaurants: Caf Claire serves up Franco-American cuisine, while Mandopop specialises in contemporary Chinese dishes.

The cost

Rooms start from £68 per night. A one-bedroom suite with balcony costs from £82, room only. For more, visit www.oriental-residence.com, or call 00 66 2125 9000.

The Sukhothai Bangkok

618-sukhothai

What's so special

This family friendly hotel has plenty of old-world charm and lots of onsite facilities for guests who get tired of the frantic city streets and sights of Bangkok. It also boasts a great location, close to Lumphini Park (Bangkok's first public park) and the British Embassy.

How they rate it

"Despite its size the Sukhothai has 210 rooms and suites, a swimming pool, a gym, a spa and a tennis court everything seems perfectly balanced," says Tom Vater in The Daily Telegraph. The rooms are "the very definition of far eastern luxury. The large executive deluxe rooms feel like colonial era suites in a royal guesthouse, furnished with teakwood and Thai fabrics and are just perfect for family holidays, honeymoon breaks or small business meetings". The bathrooms have "wooden floors and large tubs round off the refined picture".

The menu

There are three restaurants offering "something for every palate", from classic Thai cuisine to pizza and pasta, to international dining.

The cost

Rooms cost from £138 per night, including breakfast and internet access. Find out more at www.sukhothai.com; 00 66 2344 8888.
