Six hotels offering fabulous food

Looking to treat yourself, or the foodie in your life? Each of these hotels has been awarded one or more Michelin stars, or comes highly recommended by other top chefs.

The Caledonian, Edinburgh

The Caledonian is “the grande dame” of hotels in the Scottish capital, says Amy Everett in Red. Its Pompadour restaurant is a “frilly French affair [which] somewhat resembles a wedding cake”, and has two Michelin stars.

The food is even more impressive than the décor – “try the Isle of Skye crab and hollandaise tartlet with soft poached quail’s egg, leek purée and baby leek salad”.

Hand & Flowers, Berkshire

This was the first gastro pub (pictured above) to be awarded two Michelin stars, and is “essentially a restaurant with rooms”, says Everett. Chef Tom Kerridge’s signature dishes are decidedly on the indulgent side: from roast hog, deep-fried whitebait and slow-cooked duck breast with triple fried chips to deep-fried pig’s head”.

Hotel Thoumieux, Paris

Food at the Hotel Thoumieux“This is my favourite hotel with food,” says French chef Michel Roux Jr in The Times. The hotel is “by no means a palace”, but it has “two great restaurants run by the inimitable star chef Jean-François Piège”. The ground-floor brasserie “revisits great classic dishes to give them a contemporary twist”.

On the first floor is “the gastronomic dining room”, where the cooking is “firmly based on classic skill and technique, yet… is light, innovative and has a sense of love that food should have”.

Fairyhill, Swansea

“For foodies and wine lovers, delightfully informal Fairyhill is a Welsh institution,” says Sally Shalam in The Guardian. Head chef David Whitcross worked at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck. “Enjoy signature deep-fired cockle canapés on the terrace”, or sample the likes of “wild sewin (sea trout)… and Gower lamb loin with filo of lamb belly”.

The Three Chimneys, Skye

This hotel “sits in the middle of nowhere on the Isle of Skye – the setting is truly beautiful”, says English chef Angela Hartnett in The Times. She loves “the chef/director Michael Smith’s food… he is a true master of Scottish gastronomy”. Scottish-sourced ingredients include lobsters and Black Isle beef.

Hotel Atrio, Cáceres, Spain

“What I love about this hotel is the location – right within the old walls of Cáceres,” a Unesco World Heritage site, says Spanish chef José Pizarro in The Times. “There is a peacefulness that makes it a perfect weekend destination.

Then there’s the food, of course, which is the main attraction for me, not to mention the views.” The hotel restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars – Pizarro recommends the squid with pig’s ear.
