This is the all-new, fire-breathing, top-of-the-range Mercedes S-Class, says Paul Bond in AutoExpress, the S63 AMG. And it is “probably the most civilised and refined car ever” to come from Mercedes’ high-performance division. It is “less visceral and engaging” to drive than, say, the C63 AMG, but the “luxury and effortless performance are in a different league”.
At £119,595, it’s pretty pricey, says Bond, but “you do get an awful lot of bang for your buck”. The 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 engine now produces 576bhp and that has led to a dramatic increase in performance: 62mph from rest arrives in just 4.4 seconds, and if you choose the optional Driver’s Pack (£2,760) to remove the electronic limiter, it will carry on to a top speed of 186mph.
It is also “extremely agile for such a big and heavy car”, remaining “flat and composed regardless of cornering speed”, and “incredibly refined”, with almost no noise in the cabin at all, even at speeds well in excess of 80mph.
The interior features the same class-leading quality as the standard S-Class, albeit with sportier AMG touches, says Rory White in What Car. The cabin is beautifully finished, with high-quality detailing, bespoke dashboard trims and swathes of double-stitched leather. “If you want proper supercar pace one minute and top-notch comfort and refinement the next, nothing does it better than the new S63 AMG.”
