The FTSE 100 saw further falls yesterday. The index closed down 0.8% at 6,595.
Miners were hardest hit as metals prices fell. Fresnillo was the worst performer, falling 8.8%. Randgold fell 4.4%, Anglo American lost 4.2% and Vedanta was 2.9% lower.
In Europe, the Paris CAC 40 fell ten points to 4,285, and the German Xetra Dax slipped four points to 9,401.
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.5% to 16,008, the S&P 500 fell 0.3% to 1,800, and the Nasdaq Composite was 0.4% lower at 4,045.
Overnight in Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.6% 15,749, and the broader Topix index added 0.3% to 1,262. And in China, the Shanghai Composite gained 0.7% to 2,222 and the CSI 300 was 1% higher at 2,442.
In the forex markets this morning, sterling was trading against the US dollar at 1.6384 and against the euro at 1.2084. The dollar was trading at 0.7375 against the euro and 103.03 against the Japanese yen.
And today, brewer and pub operator Greene King reported an increase in profits for the first half of the year. Pre-tax profits in the six months to 13 October rose by 5.7% to £85.6m. Revenue grew by 5.2% to £595.4m.
