I have long been a fan of this epic Champagne producer and my desert island fizz would definitely come from its cellars. I am lucky to see ‘pre-release screenings’ of mind-blowing wines from around the world and this means that I often have to sit on my hands for months before writing my favourites up.
While ChampagneDirect, Berry Bros & Rudd, Uncorked and Fortnum & Mason all stock the spectacular 1999 vintage of this wine, ChampagneDirect is ahead of the game with this 2004 release and I am grateful to them for allowing me to feature this wine as a scoop in MoneyWeek, months ahead of the competition, rather than waiting until Christmas.
Around 30% of the wine was vinified in oak barrels and only two-thirds went though malolactic fermentation. The dosage is 6 g/l. Technical gumph out of the way (Champagne nerds need this info!), all you need to know is that this is one of the most amazing flavours that I have ever tasted. Magical from start to finish – this is the Billecart way. You have to taste it, because you will never look back.
