2012 Jules Taylor, Grüner Veltliner, Marlborough, New Zealand (£14.95, Uncorked, 020-7638 5998, www.uncorked.co.uk; Handford, 020-7589 6113, www.handford.net).
I was asked to present a flight of New Zealand and Austrian grüners at an aromatic symposium in Nelson (South Island of New Zealand) earlier this year to a gathering of the world’s wine media. I accepted this invitation but halfway through the task in hand I almost wanted to bottle out. The Kiwi offerings were dire, suffering from being made from young vines and also showing a distinct lack of practice. They can be forgiven – it’s a new variety for them. The Austrians, chosen by expert grüner winemaker Markus Huber, were all fascinating and some were exceptional.
This trendy grape is the ‘new viognier’ – or it is the ‘new albarino’? Not sure. Either way, when it is made well the rasping acidity and near-tropical fruit is thrilling. I wish Jules Taylor’s wine had been in the line-up.
It is the finest non-Austrian grüner veltliner I have tasted to date. She is an exceptional talent and if this wine was in an Austrian line up, it would have indeed scored highly. That’s serious praise from an international grüner sceptic. It’s also great value. Get in quick because stock is understandably very limited.
