A stunning new chardonnay

2009 Marimar Estate, Acero Chardonnay, Don Miguel Vineyard, Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, California (£24.32-£27, Penistone Court Wine Cellars, 01226-766037; Vinopolis, 020-7940 8300; Vintage Marque, 01442-289306).

I have followed Marimar Torres’s wines for years, but none have moved me as much as this stunning, newly released acero chardonnay.

Marimar, a pioneering lady, is the sister of wine legend Miguel Torres and the daughter of the late Don Miguel after whom she named her beautifully situated, organic- and biodynamically-farmed vineyard.

Marimar first planted this site, in the Green Valley, only ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, in 1986. The maritime influence and frequent foggy conditions make it ideal for both chardonnay and pinot noir.

At this point I need you, my MoneyWeek wine lover, to banish any thoughts of ‘classically shaped’ Californian chardonnay from your mind – I know you are imagining a heavily oaked, hefty creature, bereft of refreshing acidity and built for main course combat! In its place, conjure up an image of a cool-climate, exotic chardonnay whose name in English means ‘steel’.

Yes, that’s right, there is no oak used in this sensual wine’s production and yet it still has a wondrous, gossamer texture and heavenly citrus and musk aroma. A few glasses with a Dover sole is unquantifiable bliss.
