NV Delamotte Brut, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Champagne, France (£26.95, Corney & Barrow, 020-7265 2430).
The finest independent wine specialist tastings of the year were Lea & Sandeman (Benedick), Tanners, Haynes, Hanson & Clark (Pierre Vaudon), Yapp Brothers (Dumangin), Swig (Lacourte-Godbillon) and Corney & Barrow.
Last week I wrote up Tanners’ own-label Champagne as the perfect party Champs, and the other merchants listed above all have their own brilliant brands noted in brackets above, so do track them down.
This New Year’s Eve I have decided to write up a wine that I have long been a fan of, but never found the space to sing its praises. Delamotte is a brilliant Champagne house and it is the sister of the cosmic dreamboat Salon Le Mesnil.
Delamotte’s portfolio of wines is very good indeed: NV Blanc de Blancs, NV Rosé and 2004 Vintage Blanc de Blancs are all lovely.
My preferred cuvée is this week’s featured wine – not least because the value is incredible. This NV creation is beautifully clean and refreshing, with delicate fruit and an ethereal, spellbinding finish. Hundreds of Champagnes set out to be as magical as this one, but very few achieve this aim.
