Alfa Romeo is a brand based in sports car and motor racing heritage, and its Mito has been a looker since it was launched in 2008, says Ryan Borroff in City AM. This new TwinAir model is no exception: it still looks “fresh and uniquely characterful in a sporty, muscular, even elegant way”, but now, under the bonnet, it has Fiat’s award-winning TwinAir, two-cylinder, 875cc turbo engine.
And this is “something of a marvel”: drive carefully and it will “sip fuel”, but under heavy acceleration, it is “peppy” and sounds great – like a vintage motorcycle. It’s not all that fast – 62mph is reached in 12.5 seconds and the top speed is just 108mph – but it feels much faster than it is. That makes for great driving – it’s “more fun than Christmas”.
It’s one of those rare cars that proves the old adage that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow, agrees Harry Metcalfe in Evo. Combine that with the “cute looks”, and this “pert little bundle of Italian fun” looks set to be a hit.
